Day Overview
We’ll start the day by trying on the sneaker samples to determine the correct size for your sneakers.
Then we’ll choose the leather options for your sneakers. There are many different options, so it’s a good idea to look at some samples and think about whether you prefer an everyday sneaker that blends in with most outfits, or something that really stands out and expresses your personality. Think about the kind of clothes you regularly wear and how you would like your new shoes to work with those kinds of outfits. You can check out this post for a good way to brainstorm some design ideas, or have a look at the workshop gallery to see some other students’ makes.
For most sizes, you will also be able to choose from a white sole or a black sole (the bottom part of the shoe that touches the ground). Some sizes only have white available.
Next up, we’ll cut out the leather pieces and punch all the holes needed to stitch the sneakers together.
We’ll add eyelets to the shoelace holes and start stitching parts of the shoe together.
Once we get up to stitching the leather to the sole, you shoe will really start to take shape!
Finally, we’ll choose a pair of shoelaces to complement our new sneakers and lace them up. Then it’s time to take a few quick photos and try them on.
Snacks / Lunch / Breaks
I’ll provide some light snacks and drinks during the workshop. I also have filtered water available, so feel free to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
Lunch is not included. We normally take a 1 hour break for lunch around 1pm. I highly recommend “Saveurs de Coree (韩香馆)”, a Korean restaurant about 5 minutes’ walk from the studio. Their food is excellent and they cater to vegetarian and other requirements. It’s a good chance to stretch your legs and get ready for the afternoon session.
Accessibility and Support Needs
The workshop involves working with your hands for extended periods, including cutting, hole-punching and stitching. If you have mobility limitations, arthritis, joint pain, reduced grip strength, or fatigue issues, you’re still very welcome to attend. Many steps can be done at your own pace with regular breaks. Please let me know ahead of time if you have any concerns or would like to discuss adjustments – I’d be happy to talk through support or modification options so you can participate comfortably.
Please note that the workshop space is located in a building with limited accessibility. Access requires using two sets of stairs. This means the in-studio workshop is not suitable for participants who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids that require step-free entry. If you’re unsure whether the location will work for you, feel free to get in touch before booking and we can talk it through. I recognise this is not ideal and want to be upfront so you can make an informed decision.
A Welcoming Space
My studio is an inclusive, respectful environment. All genders, sexualities, and identities, including LGBTQIA+ community members are welcome. Everyone is expected to treat each other with courtesy and respect. If you have specific needs or concerns around comfort or safety, reach out ahead of time. Please share your pronouns if you’d like to.
Tips
- Bring or wear the type of socks you’d like to wear with your sneakers
- Bring a water bottle if you’d like to
- Let me know in advance if you have any food allergies or intolerances so I can adjust the snack options
- Plan to arrive a little early to ensure we can get started on time
- We usually finish around 6pm, depending on how the day goes, sometimes a little later. Best not to plan anything straight afterwards in case it takes a little longer.
